Elect Julius Arscott for Secretary-Treasurer of the OFL

Dear comrades and siblings,

I am excited to announce that I announce my campaign as the Workers Action Movement (WAM) candidate for Secretary-Treasurer of the Ontario Federation of Labour!

Across the country and around the world there is a labour awakening. Strikes to contend with the rising cost of living and growing job insecurity are shaking the establishment. From giant grocery chains to sprawling dockyards, from federal public services to salt mines, to railway car makers, to liquor stores, to movie and TV production sets, workers are standing up. Who will be next to take job action: teachers, truck drivers, nurses, warehouse workers, auto workers? CUPE education support workers defied Ford last fall and walked out, showing the way forward!

Many who choose to strike do so only after turning down flawed tentative agreements recommended by conservative union leaders. Meanwhile the bosses bank billions in profit and serve the interests of the war mongering, nature-destroying ruling capitalist class.

Isn't it time to WAM it to the bosses and the bureaucrats?

Lets put Movement back into the Labour movement!

About Julius:

Julius began his career in the Ontario Public Service as an Ontario Ranger at Machesney Lake in 2000. He subsequently worked seasonally for Ontario Parks for 7 years across central and northeastern Ontario, and has been an active member in OPSEU since 2007.  He has been an Executive Board Member for Toronto Region 5 for three terms. Julius has served four terms as President of Local 532, and sat on the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks Ministry Employee Relations Committee (MERC). He worked on several campaigns, including efforts to halt the wage freeze in the Ontario Public Service (OPS) and in the fight against privatization.

He has been at the forefront of opposition to concessionary collective agreements. This means opposing wage freezes, low increases due to Bill 124, 2-tier wages and benefits, and attacks on our pensions. Julius is also a strong proponent of solidarity with the rest of the labour movement and workers everywhere.  He has championed these ideas at the Ontario Federation of Labour and at the Canadian Labour Congress as a leader of the Workers' Action Movement (WAM).

As an Executive Board Member, Julius has participated in and organized many rallies and pickets for community and social justice issues. Most recently, his accomplishments include winning adoption of union policy in support of remote and flexible work as well as open bargaining. Julius has also won the union to adopt positions in support of healthcare workers against the anti-social Convoy and against Trudeau’s undemocratic Emergencies Act.

Julius believes that the OFL is doing far too little to challenge the austerity agenda of the Conservatives and Liberals. He has been a vocal proponent of mass action against Bill 124, for at least 10 paid sick days for all workers, and for higher wages/benefits. He has argued for greater union democracy, rejection of all forms of concessions bargaining, for diversity and inclusion, and better collective agreements for workers.

Julius insists that only a class struggle movement can overcome defenders of the status quo in the labour movement. The OFL must advocate such policies at every opportunity. We should build our movement, be accountable and be fully transparent. Mobilize workers to win! Our movement is broken. We must fix it!

Workers needs a positive force for change, one that is determined to break the hold of capitalist austerity and to end the downward spiral of concessions bargaining. We can demonstrate that we are the force for progressive change and economic justice.

Electing Julius will ensure that workers will have a voice within the OFL to challenge the status quo -- someone who is willing to put the time and effort into building the movement we need.
